HOCKEY NIGHT IN ALLENTOWN: “Done With Mirrors” 4/24/2021

Looking Back

The Phantoms looked predictably bad Wednesday night at the PPL Center in a 6-1 loss to the Hershey Bears.  The COVID layoff was a given, but we also saw the return of a couple players who had been injured for a spell (Kase, Zamula, Sandstrom) and some who hadn’t been playing frequently (MacMaster, Saulnier, Laberge) and one making his pro debut (York).  In addition, Coach Gordon revealed in post-game media session that some players were still feeling the immune-response effects from Monday’s COVID vaccine session.  Lack of cohesiveness led to an uncharacteristic 3/7 Power Play for the Bears.

Last night in Newark was another story.  While, in the 4-2 Phantoms win, the Devils were able to convert 2/4 on the Power Play, the Phantoms had much better of the 5×5 and outshot the red team 40-28 despite leading most of the way.  Young Tyson Foerster had the first two goals, while veteran Andy Andreoff notched the other two.  Zamula and Wotherspoon added two apples apiece.

That’s the latest as of Saturday morning.  Consult last game post for moves prior to Wednesday.

GAME DAY!

7:05PM Showtime tonight at the PPL Center.  It should be the most-attended game yet, so take that into account when planning your arrival and parking.  “Orange Lot” arena garage is still available for $6.  I haven’t heard anything different from the 6:30 doors we’ve been having this shortened season.  I’ve been told additional concessions and bars will be open inside the arena compared with Wednesday and before.  Chickie’s and 99 Bottles still not available during the game, as far as I know.  The Dime may open soon as we get to May.

The Phantoms are just better than the Devils.  29 points to 16 points and the Devils have played three more games–largely, if not completely, against the same competition.  It was a nice rebound for the orange team last night, but the rematch tonight may get feisty.  We had the post-goal fight by Andreoff last night, but also some loud chirping by the benches, with the Phantoms chorus lead by Saulnier–perhaps still feeling it from his Wednesday night fisticuffs.  The Devils are ranked in the lower half of the league in both special teams squads.

What To Watch

  1. The special teams units are certainly something to be observed tonight.  Why has a PK unit which has been ranked #1 in the entire AHL all season long despite all roster machinations, now suddenly in the middle of the pack?  On a small sample, it’s among the worst.  Is the Power Play improving?  How does the youngster Cam York look running it?  They had a more conventional PP formation Wednesday night, watch to see if they return to more of the umbrella that Coach Gordon normally prefers.
  2. Look to see which concessions and bars are open, and how long the lines are.  There are mobile ordering options for either pick up or delivery (club)–how are they working?
  3. Watch Cam York.  Reports from Newark yesterday suggest that he’s getting his pro legs under him and settling in a bit compared with Wednesday.  Does he take another step?  Get some points and/or goals?
  4. Zayde Wisdom has been out the past two games.  Watch to see if he returns.
  5. Can Tyson Foerster continue to plague the Devils?  Will one of the Devils answer Saulnier’s challenge?

Looking Ahead

If the Phantoms think they’re going to get any of the cancelled postponed games rescheduled, they’re going to have to do it with mirrors.  I also don’t think any type of playoffs are going to happen.  But, I can’t say for sure.  So we stay tuned.  Here’s the balance of the Phantoms 2021 abbreviated season:
