The IronPigs limp home following a 2-6 road swing through Scranton and P’tucket. In fact, they finished May at 11-16, and are currently 1-2 in June. All this losing has them 3.5 games back of first place Scranton in the IL North. Fortunately, other teams have adversity, too, and other than Scranton, no one is really winning.
What’s the problem? The usual, in AAA. Rosters and lineups get mangled by uncontrollable factors including but not limited to: Injuries, Call-Ups, Availability, and Development. The strength of this team was always going to be the starting rotation, but the Phillies have made so many moves of guys in and out of our rotation, that the strength of the team has suffered. The injuries to relievers in Philadelphia has removed all of the 40-man-roster players from our bull-pen. Young relievers who looked great in AA are having some trouble adjusting. It could be the MLB baseball we’re using this season, or the better hitters, or a little of both. This is costing us games.
Help Is On The Way
OF Jan Hernandez returns to the lineup tonight, following an injured hand/arm suffered when he was hit by a pitch. He was exceeding my expectations when he went down; I hope he can pick up where he left off. He’s been in Clearwater getting healthy, and has had some time to see some pitching and swing the bat. And speaking of outfielders, Roman Quinn should be back soon–perhaps in a rehab role for the AAA squad for a time next week, or should he go to the Phillies, a player could come back, such as Phil Gosselin (caveat: He would have to pass through waivers and accept his assignment.) Another outfielder, Nick Williams, is also on his way back, having been optioned again with the arrival of Jay Bruce in Philadelphia. With injuries to Dylan Cozens (toe surgery, out indefinitely) and Shane Robinson (Hip) this will give veteran Lane Adams some help out in the outfield.
Pitchers are returning, too. LHP Ranger Suarez has made a couple starts since returning from his injury. Enyel De Los Santos is back from Philadelphia, and getting stretched out to start regularly again (I hope; he pitches tonight. Watch his pitch count.) LHP Cole Irvin is on his way back via option, as well. Alexis Rivero did a nice job filling in, and Tyler Viza has had a couple good showings, but we should be getting some semblance of our previous rotation back together.
Hopefully, Philadelphia can get some of their veteran relievers back soon, which would send a couple guys back to the IronPigs to help on the back end. I hate to send prospects backwards, but there are a couple talented bull-pen guys who maybe could use a re-set. I believe in their talent, but they’re getting abused in AAA right now, it seems. Perhaps they’re closer than I think, but I’d at least consider getting Dohy and Leftwich a few innings in Reading to regain their confidence and feel some success.
