IronPigs 10th Anniversary Team: Second Base

This one is a little tougher.  I’ve enjoyed watching all these guys play, and even if you added Pablo Ozuna and David Newhan, I’d still have trouble crossing guys off.  Who knew second base was going to be so tough?  Ozzie Chavez, probably.

Reasons to vote for Franny:

  • Played hard every night
  • Protested wearing ugly “holiday” jerseys
  • Fan friendly–at least by my observation and dealings
  • Openly campaigned on Twitter last night
  • Cool Red Hot Chili Peppers walk-up song
  • Made contribution to Phillies
  • The story about him and his brother, and the charity, is inspiring (ninteenforlife.org)

Reasons not to vote for Franny:

  • Bailed on us for Washington
  • But who can blame him–get that MLB paycheck

Tyler Henson

Reasons to vote for the “Hen-dog”:

  • Even more “gritty” player
  • Never got to Phillies, but he was more “ours”
  • Very fan friendly
  • Best walk up song ever–and you could hear it from the parking lot.  They even played it for him in Scranton–after which he homered.
  • Will be coaching in Williamsport this season–still in the Phillies system
  • Had lunch with the NoiseNation one time–his wife, too!

Reasons not to vote for Henson:

  • He may be eligible at other positions–played wherever they needed him.  Wait, that’s another reason to vote for him!

Cesar Hernandez

Reasons to vote for Cesar Hernandez:

  • Still on the Phillies as the second baseman
  • The most MLB contribution from this group
  • Great guy but was painfully shy about his English skills, which minimized his fan interaction and interview access.
  • Hit a ton of triples for IronPigs
  • Turned a ton of double plays for IronPigs
  • Jersey fits DiPro

Reasons not to vote for Cesar:

  • (I can’t think of any)

Josh Barfield

Reasons to vote for Barfield:

  • Was an important part of our first ever playoff team
  • Dad (former MLB player Jesse) and Brother (Jeremy, also an MiLB player) are great Twitter follows and followed NoiseNation for some time–if not to this day!

Reasons not to vote for Barfield:

  • (I can’t think of any)

……

So when we break it all down, Franny and Hendog are the strongest candidates.  But I couldn’t totally decide whom the NoiseNation should endorse for your vote, so I put it out there to the team–Dan, Decal, DiPro, Cheryl–and Henson was the choice.

But….I have to admit to splitting the ticket because once I got Frandsen’s tweet this morning asking for our vote, I voted for him myself….

  1. I like both of them too. But Hernandez-Galvis was the best double-play combo the ‘Pigs ever had and gave us tremendous strength up the middle. So I’ll go with Cesar, English skills be damned!

    • I thought he spoke just fine in the few chances I got to speak with him–he was just cautious about being on camera or on the record for interviews. I imagine he’s doing better now that he’s in Philly for so long.
