As I wrote in IronPigs Today this morning, Carlos Alonso hasn’t been used much lately by the Reading Fightins.  When Junior and I (and Steve) talked to him a couple weeks ago, that was part of the deal with dropping down to AA again was to get more game action and more at-bats than he might have otherwise at AAA.  However, with Taylor Featherston in the Majors, Darnell Sweeney on the shelf, and high-level prospect Scott Kingery getting all the time at second base in Reading, it makes sense now for Alonso to return.

Joely returns with his left arm in overdrive, now after getting comfortable in the bull pen.  In 33 appearances for Reading this season, he’s recorded a 7-0 record and a 2.57 ERA.  He has 49 innings, so he has averaged more than one inning per appearance–not necessarily one-out kind of work.  He has 41 strikeouts over those innings, and 16 walks.  It’s time to see what he can do in AAA again.

Sweeney was really playing some good ball of late, and had kind of taken over that lead-off spot, as well.  He was playing decent enough defense, too, at 2B, 3B and in CF.  Hopefully he’s back shortly; it’s a good sign that he wasn’t DL’d as part of this cycle.

See you at the park,

@Kram209
