RHP Zach Eflin had contract selected by Philadelphia.
RHP Luis Garcia optioned to LHV from Philadelphia.
LHP Anthony Vasquez promoted to LHV from Reading (AA).
Anthony Vasquez will wear uniform #40
Roster returns to full 25; the IronPigs have made 53 roster moves in 63 games.
Finally some clarity on the Pigs rotation. The day/night job on Saturday still looms large, but this move will allow James Russell to make one of those starts, and perhaps Sev Gonzalez will get a spot start in the other. Reading RHP Nick Pivetta has started 23 games at the AA level and is 23 years old. He’s coming off a fine game on Sunday (7IP/3H/0R/3BB/4K–98P/64K) and would be available. I’m not saying he’s ready or he’s not–plenty of people are saying he’s not–but a one-game shot might be considered. It worked for Tyler Cloyd once. Clearwater heads to the mid-season break, which should bring either RHP Thomas Eshelman or LHP Elniery Garcia or both to Reading at some point.
For the IronPigs right now, it means the return of a pitcher familiar with the level. Vasquez has been dominant at times at AA this season and has acted as the senior mentor for some of those young arms down there. He’s also had a couple dud outings. His season totals at AA are: 12 starts, 7-3, 3.28ERA, 1.23 WHIP. He’ll need to have the good command of his lefty pitches to avoid showing too many fastballs to the more advanced AAA hitters.
I’m not expecting RHP Alec Asher (hair-line leg fracture) or RHP Mark Appel (shoulder) back until next month at the soonest. Zach Eflin will likely make at least one more start for the injured Velasquez in Philadelphia, and it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that he sticks with the Phillies for the rest of the season. We’re cheering for him, of course!
See you at the park,
