IRONPIGS TODAY: “Asher, Asher, They All Fall Down” 5/1/16

“In baseball the object is to go home!  And to be safe!  ‘I hope I’ll be safe at home!'”

-George Carlin

[Breaking:  Today’s game has been postponed due to rain.  It will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, June 18.]

RHP Alec Asher made his AAA debut for the IronPigs last night.  He was a surprise “demotion” to AA to start the season, but like Adam Morgan, quickly returned to where we all thought he’d start the season.  His start was tremendous last night.  He was able to keep his new, sinking fastball down, and hit the corners both inside and out.  It clocked in at 89-91 T93 on the gun.  The real key, though, was his ability to command his slider.  He was starting it in the zone and running it out–or starting it out and having it come over for a strike.  By having such good control of it, it kept the batters honest, limited hard contact, and kept them from zeroing in on his fastball.  Ironically, it was the first shake-off of the night, when Asher insisted on the slider over Knapp’s call, that hung up a bit too much and got hit yard with two outs in the ninth.  No matter, Mujica cleaned up and we went home with the 3-2 win.

Player Notes

RHP Dalier Hinojosa was added to the DL yesterday in Philly.  RHP Colton Murray was recalled from the IronPigs for that spot.  Some were surprised, but the 10-day rule meant that recently demoted RHP Luis Garcia was ineligible to go back up (they could have just kept him, but…) and Murray is already on the 40-man, where Mujica is not.  Murray was not replaced on the ‘Pigs roster, and an official change was not distributed yet.  We’ll post when available.

OF Cam Perkins extended his hitting streak last night.  Tommy Joseph did not.

Edward Mujica with the save, now leads the IL.  He also has an opt-out today, so we’ll see what happens with that.  Unless he’s got an offer to go straight to the bigs, I think staying put and getting in line for the Phillies bull-pen carousel is the best choice.  He’ll get up there.  See more on Mujica below.

Today’s Game

Scheduled for today:

RHP David Buchanan (0-1, 4.58) is on the mound to face LHP Wade LeBlanc (2-1, 2.22) for the Bisons, before they leave town after the game.

They have to get home for Scranton tomorrow evening, which may impact the decision to wait out the rain and get the game in today.  The Bisons are back in town June 17-19, which would give two chances for a double-header on Friday June 17 and Saturday June 18.  They’ll also be in town right after the All Star break, Thursday July 14 through Sunday July 17.  There are a couple opportunities for a day-night double dip, there, and as per usual, it coincides with my vacation schedule.

Promotion:  Replica Jersey day for the kiddos.  Post-game run the bases, and Tootsie the Clown.

Youth_Replica_Jersey_480_j9y2p62j_wc9abvgf Gear Watch:  No sign of the authentic jerseys in the store, yet.  The new Star Wars cap is kind of cool–I love the Star Wars logo on the side, but shy away from snap-backs.  Don’t know if I’ll make it out today to wait out the rains, but if so I plan a throwback vest and maybe a rain-suitable giveaway cap.

Kram’s Korner

The thrill of the victory last night not as sweet as it should have been, as I watched the SteelHawks scores coming up on my phone.  They choked away a perfect season.  They’ll need to work hard to assure a home playoff game, now.  Trying to plan the rest of the home-stand this week a pain with the rain all the time.  Rain should only happen at night…

See you at the park, some other day,

@Kram209

PS:  We all know how good Cheryl’s action shots are by now.  And not just IronPigs, we’ve got SteelFC and SteelHawks shots in our library which are just fabulous.  I’ve noticed something lately, though.  She’s started capturing some ‘moments’ between plays and separate from the action.  It’s only my opinion, but in those shots I think she’s showing that she’s not just a technician as a photographer, but an artist.  See those two Mujica photos above.  Then, the Featherston shot below.  You start to get a feel for the personality of the players, and that’s soooo cool!
