We’ve been talking about it and waiting, but the moves were finally made official, as the ‘Pigs get set to start an eight-game home set at soggy Coca Cola Park this evening.
LHP Adam Morgan recalled by Philadelphia.
RHP Luis Garcia optioned to LHV from Philadelphia.
RHP Alec Asher promoted to LHV from Reading (AA).
RHP Severino Gonzalez promoted to LHV from Reading (AA).
RHP Reinier Roibal assigned to Reading (AA).
LHP Hoby Milner assigned to Reading (AA).
Asher will wear #23; Garcia returns to #57
The need for an additional starter had been obvious as we heard of Adam Morgan’s impending call to replace the injured Charlie Morton with the Phillies. Like Morgan, who probably earned an MLB job in March, Asher was also squeezed out and pushed down to Reading to start.
Garcia was called up when Morton was first injured, so it’s not a total surprise to see him back. There have been some rumblings of a possible injury to Dalier Hinojosa with the Phillies, so if a DL stint is needed, I imagine Garcia will be headed right back up. In the mean time, we’ll make good use of Garcia, as he was lights-out in his last couple appearances before the call. Plus, we may lose Mujica to opt-out by Sunday.
The Roibal/Milner moves are a little more puzzling. The slim lefty Milner has been using a new, more side-arm delivery and had tremendous results on the road trip: He didn’t allow a run. Roibal doesn’t have numbers to show it, but I thought he was serviceable in what he was asked to do for the IronPigs–making spot starts and whatnot. He gave the team a chance to win every time out and didn’t lose a game.
Reading made some moves today, too. They get RHP John Richy from Clearwater to join the rotation in Asher’s spot. He came over in the Utley deal, had started 21 career games at A-Advanced, and will get his first taste of AA ball. Reading also jettisoned their backup catcher, back to EST, which probably means Jorge Alfaro is close to returning from what was thought to be a strained oblique.
Here’s how the rotation might stack up over the next few days–with the caveat that a rain-out could cause further jumbling because with the recent off-day, Brundy could use two starters in a double-header situation if he wanted:
See you at the park,
