IronPigs Roster Move: “Like Cream, Bailey Rises to the Top”

In advance of yesterday’s double-header in Syracuse–both games were won by the IronPigs (!)–a roster move was announced.

Roster Move:

RHP Andrew Bailey recalled by Philadelphia, from AAA IronPigs

LHP Hoby Milner promoted from (EST) Williamsport (A) to AAA IronPigs

LHP James Russell Designated For Assignment by Philadelphia

Regional native Bailey had certainly performed well for the IronPigs on this young season.  Had I published a “reliever confidence rating” he would have been at or near the top.

Russell had not performed well with the big team thus far.  It’s not going to be unusual for the Phillies to do this, this season.  Russell had a svelte 18.69ERA over 4.1 innings in 7 appearances with the team.

The addition of Milner is somewhat curious.  If they expected Russell to clear waivers and accept his assignment to Allentown, then they’d have likely left our roster spot open.  Then again, with a double-header on tap yesterday afternoon, it was certainly likely that we’d need an arm before Russell could or would join the team on the road.

The rail-thin Milner, a 2012 7th round pick out of Texas, was converted to a reliever last season in Reading.  He had started 25 games in 2014 (10-6, 4.21) but the thinking was that his left arm might be more useful in the pen–29 games, 3.69.  Indeed, his strikeout percentage when way up, while his WHIP when down.  Is he ready for AAA?  How long will he be with us?  These questions still remain, and moves could still be coming as the Fightins are home this weekend with the IronPigs in New England.

See you at the park,
