Late yesterday the Phillies acquired RHB Outfielder Alfredo Marte from the Orioles organization for cash considerations. He was added to the IronPigs today to fill an empty roster spot. He will wear jersey number 31.
OF Alfredo Marte added to IronPigs (AAA)
The move adds a right-handed bat to the veteran outfield mix which now includes Lough (MLB), Asche (DL), Hunter, and Venable.
Marte is a veteran of three AAA seasons, although mostly in the PCL. He hits for a modicum of power, but is more notable as a .300-hitter in AAA. The native of the Dominican Republic came up through the Arizona system, spent some time with the Angels (note: possible Klentak connection?) and was with the Orioles’ AAA Norfolk team this season. Marte is listed as a right fielder. He’s been to the show with the Angels and the Diamondbacks.
Venable has an opt-out coming up May 1, but hasn’t hit well yet. Asche should start swinging a bat right about then. There could be the thought of adding an extra pitcher for the double-header tomorrow, but who to sent to Reading in exchange? With Carlos Alonso on the shelf for the foreseeable future, this give the ‘Pigs another bat, and Sweeney as another infielder > outfielder. (Sweeney made a really nice play–or two–at second last night.)
