I always wonder when I see the guys walking around so nonchalant during batting practice. I’d worry about getting hit with a darn ball. I figure these guys have such good hand-eye they can ward off any potential threatening projectiles.
Unfortunately, INF Carlos Alonso took one in the chops the other day–I’m not sure the details–but it’s a real shame because he missed most of last season with a leg injury thanks to a take-out slide early on in Reading. He had looked good early this season in limited opportunity during his first crack at AAA. His jaw is broken and we hope it heals quickly so that we can get him back on board.

RHP Severino Gonzalez promoted from Reading (AA)

As mentioned above, we wish Carlos the best. I didn’t meet him, but his reputation is that of a real stand-up guy. I had predicted he’d be a fan-favorite this summer at Coca Cola Park.
Sev Gonzalez has looked good in Reading thus far, working in relief. He’s throwing harder and even missing some bats–which had been his bugaboo as a starter last season. His fastball has been playing up–I think I saw 94 the other day in Reading–and we’ll watch how his secondaries work off that.
The extra arm comes in handy with today’s bullpen game. It is possible Sev sticks around or that he gets returned to Reading in favor of an infielder (is that JP Crawford’s music I hear?) after this weekend’s games. Another reliever could be on the chopping block if Sev sticks.
See you at the park,
