BETHLEHEM, Pa. (March 24, 2016) – Bethlehem Steel FC has acquired Fred (Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva) as a player and assistant coach ahead of the 2016 inaugural season, the club announced Thursday.

“Fred brings with him the playing experience that will help mentor the younger players as they encounter challenges and opportunities,” said Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke. “It is a unique role that will enable Fred to guide the team through example and make us stronger as we continue to develop throughout the season.”

Fred, 37, started his professional career in 1997 and spent many years playing in his native Brazil before joining the Melbourne Victory in the Australian A-League in 2006 where he helped the side win their first A-League Grand Final. The attacking midfielder joined MLS in 2007 signing for D.C. United from the Australian side.

In 2010, he joined the Philadelphia Union from D.C. United in a trade for a first-round SuperDraft pick and allocation money. He spent a total three seasons with the Union through the course of 2010 until 2015. During his first year with the Union, Fred played in 25 games with 24 starts, totaling 1,913 minutes and contributing four goals and one assist.

The Brazilian returned to D.C. United and the Australian A-League from 2011 through 2013, and rejoined the Union ahead of the 2014 season. During his final two seasons with the Union, Fred appeared in 17 games of which he started three and scored one goal.

During the seven years Fred played in MLS, he appeared in 131 games with 92 starts and accumulated 8,144 minutes. He scored 16 goals and gave 18 assists. Fred was part of the D.C. United side that won the Supporters’ Shield in 2007 and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2008.

Bethlehem Steel FC will start their inaugural season on Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m. at FC Montreal in a game which will be broadcast live online via YouTube and the BSFC website.  They will officially open their doors at Lehigh University’s Goodman Stadium the following week on Sunday, April 3 against FC Cincinnati with a 3 p.m. scheduled kickoff.

  1. BETHLEHEM, Pa. (March 24, 2015) – Bethlehem Steel FC has mutually agreed to part ways with defender Raymond Lee, the club announced Thursday.

Lee, 22, joined Bethlehem Steel FC on Jan. 29, 2016 and participated in the team’s preseason. Prior to joining Steel FC, Lee played for the Philadelphia Union after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft with the No. 71 overall pick. The defender was later waived by the club on Aug. 28, 2015. While with the Union, Lee came on as a substitute during a 3-2 loss to Sporting Kansas City and started during the friendly against AFC Bournemouth on July 14, 2015.

  2. Might I gently and respectfully suggest that you re-check Fred’s actual name, simply for purposes of accuracy? What you suggest “looks wrong” to me from past exposure on the MLS Players Association salary data, and on the Union’s website. The roster listing on the USL website is different from what you suggest.

    • Thanks, Coach. Yup, turns out there are a couple different “Freds.” And several from Brazil, so my quick Wiki search yielded the wrong individual:

      1. Frederico Rodrigues Santos or simply Fred (born 5 March 1993 in Belo Horizonte) is a Brazilian footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for Shakhtar, in the Ukrainian Premier League.[1]

      2. Frederico Chaves Guedes (born 3 October 1983), known as Fred (Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈfɾɛd(ʒ)i]), is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a striker and captains Brazilian Série A club Fluminense.

      and ours:

      3. Helbert Frederico Carreiro da Silva, commonly known as Fred (born 18 August 1979 in Belo Horizonte) is a Brazilian footballer currently signed for MLS club Philadelphia Union.[1] Carreiro has also played for Australian A-League side Melbourne Heart, MLS side D.C. United, and Brazilian side América among other clubs.[2]

The change has been made above. Thanks again,

  3. So, the team that is supposed to be all about “player development” signs a 37-year-old?

    Ach so, alles klar!

The good news is, because of Philadelphia Union’s “Bare Bones Policy”, USL roster spots for Bethlehem Steel FC are NOT at a premium.
