No Southern Hospitality–Pigs Return Home 2-5

The IronPigs return home from the Deep South with only two wins in seven tries.  Now comes first-place Rochester and first-place Indy to Coca Cola Park for the next six games.  Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming home stand:

Looking Back:

The ‘Pigs left town having taken three of four from Charlotte following three straight wins in Syracuse.  They had a “last 10” of 7-3, and were one of the hottest teams in the International League when they headed towards Hot-lanta.  Then the rains came.  Two straight wash-outs followed by two days of double-headers in Lawrenceville, was enough to cool off the surging IronPigs–and stress the pitching staff.  Three games in the Charlotte Band Box yielded only one win despite some decent pitching and a spot-start by newcomer Chris Leroux.  The 2-5 trip puts the IronPigs back on the losing end in the “Last 10” and in need of a day off, which they’ll get today as they make their way home.

Roster and Players

Cody Asche was called up while the Pigs were on the road, leaving the IronPigs roster one short, at 24.  No corresponding move was made as we await the status of Grady Sizemore who was DFA’d to make room for Cody.  We expect some kind of move or moves as the ‘Pigs return home, and we’ll have a roster update and printable roster in a separate post.  Consensus speculation in the Noise Nation is that Sizemore will not be an IronPig again.

As they left town, Tyler Knigge rejoined the ‘Pigs as Colton Murray headed South on 222 to Reading.

Who’s Hot:

LHP Anthony Vasquez got the win Saturday night in Charlotte, tossing 8.0IP/3H/0R/2BB/5K and now has a 2.51 ERA.

INF Cord Phelps now has a 6-game hitting streak, and has hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games, raising his average from .167 to .228.  He’s been the every-day third baseman since the promotion of Maikel Franco.

OF Brian Bogusevic continues to mash.  He’s hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games and has hit all 4 of his HR in May.  After 47 games this season, he’s still hitting .319/.377/.434.

RHP Seth Rosin had been pitching well until a hiccup yesterday–as had LHP Cesar Jimenez who also had a hiccup on the road trip.

Since May 14, INF/OF Chase d’Arnaud is hitting .339 and leading the IL in runs scored.  The IronPigs are 15-15 when Chase is in the starting lineup.

Who’s Not

INF Tyler Henson already has 7 errors at 2B after committing only 4 all of last season (199 innings vs 336 innings).

INF Jayson Nix still hitting only .159 on the year.

Catchers struggling at the plate:  Cody Forsythe is hitting .125 and Lance Moore is hitting only .205.

INF/OF Russ Canzler hit only .053 (1 for 19) on the road trip.  His average is down to .265 on the year.

Until yesterday, OF Domonic Brown was hitting .302 on the road, but only .172 at Coca Coal Park.  He’s not hit for power:  His OPS is currently .627 in AAA.

The IronPigs just got done playing a team with near-worst attendance (Gwinnett, averaging 3,622, but had less than 2K for the IronPigs) and the team with the best attendance, Charlotte, in it’s second year downtown averaging 9,393.  The IronPigs are currently in second place, averaging 8,391 per game, a healthy 300/game ahead of Columbus.  Elsewhere around the North, Syracuse is the overall worst in the International League, and Rochester and Scranton are just above Gwinnett.  P’tucket is only drawing 5,377; one wonders if the dalliance with a new park in Providence is keeping fans away.  Buffalo is >6,000 per game, which is pretty good for northern New York early on, and second to Lehigh Valley in the North.

Out West, in the PCL, Sacramento leads the way, as they often do, but perhaps this time more so due to the new affiliation with the Giants.  Round Rock–Texas’ affiliate–and the Epi-Chihuahuas (SD) in their second year, are the top three–all above Lehigh Valley.  The new, expensive, park in Nashville comes in fourth (my seats would cost $35/game there).

Home Stand

The first-place Rochester RedWings, AAA affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, come to town for the first time in 2015.  The Pigs split a four-game series up in Rochester in the middle of May.  The RedWings were PPD yesterday and are off today.  They have lost 6 of their last 9, so it might be a good time to get them.  They’ll be here for only two, as Indianapolis will then make their only 2015 visit for four games headed into the weekend.

A couple names to know/recognize on the Rochester roster (former Phillies prospect Trevor May is up with Minnesota):  OF Oswaldo Arcia has been with the team on MLB Rehab lately, Veteran SS Doug Bernier is on the team, RHP Alex Meyer is the #5 prospect, but likely won’t start either of the two games, Pig-killer Wilkin Ramirez still roams the OF for them.

We’ll try to preview the Indy team prior to their arrival on Thursday.

What’s Next?

See you at the park,
