Roster moves happen a bit differently when the ‘Pigs are on the road: It may take a couple days for guys to report, and their uniform number will depend on what J Ross has along for the trip. Here’s what’s been going on lately as the IronPigs are in Rochester and headed to Syracuse tomorrow:
3B/1B Maikel Franco recalled by Philadelphia
SS Edgar Duran added to DL (hamstring)
RHP Dustin McGowan out-righted by Philadelphia, and assigned to IronPigs
INF Jayson Nix acquired by Philadelphia, from Baltimore, for cash considerations.
LHP Anthony Vasquez promoted from Reading to Lehigh Valley
RHP Tyler Knigge assigned to Reading from Lehigh Valley
McGowan is a 33-yo swing man and former first-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. He has 168 games of MLB experience over 8 seasons. He had appeared in 10 games with the Phillies–starting one–with a 5.79 ERA. He last appeared in the International League in 2013 with Buffalo. As far as I know, he hasn’t reported yet or been officially added to the roster. I’m expecting him to work out of the bull-pen and maybe add a modicum of veteran leadership to the struggling crew out there.
Nix appeared in the Majors in 2014 with Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City. He also appeared in 55 games with the Durham Bulls last season, batting .272/.340/.408 with 3HR and 15 2B. This season, he had been with Norfolk batting a gaudy .167/.190/.198 over 100 plate appearances in 25 games. He had been playing mostly 2B with the Tides, but will give manager Dave Brundage another option at shortstop–along with Chase d’Arnaud–given the injury to Duran. Reading is also a bit thin at SS with K.C. Serna playing there every day. He’s doing well, and I would have welcomed him to the IronPigs, but they have little depth. The position is pretty clear for the ascension of top prospect JP Crawford, who missed time to start this season with an oblique injury. He’s raking in Clearwater right now, but it appears the powers that be were not ready to push him up just yet. The IronPigs could have kept INF Chris Nelson, however, he’s not known as a shortstop–and might have had an opt-out in the works anyway, from what I’ve heard. He quickly signed with Milwaukee after his departure from Allentown. Nix has been added to the roster, but has not been issued a uniform number yet–I’m unsure if he’s arrived in Rochester yet; the Tides were in Indianapolis yesterday when the trade was completed.
LHP Anthony Vasquez is an interesting story. He underwent emergency brain surgery in 2012 while in the Mariners system. He appeared in 7 games with Seattle in 2011. He spent time last season working his way up through the Baltimore system, culminating with 3 games with AAA Norfolk. He’s been a swing-man for Reading thus far this season, starting or working long stints out of the pen as needed. He’s currently 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA with Reading. Tyler Knigge hasn’t been the only guy out in the ‘Pigs pen to struggle this season, as the crew has led the league in blown save opportunities. This roster move hasn’t been completed yet, but I welcome Anthony to help Coach Ray Burris’ relief stable, and hopefully Tyler can get things going with Reading and return to help us later this season.
See you at the park,
