IronPigs Roster Moves: The Return of Smasche!

3B Cody Asche returns to the Lehigh Valley to get work in left field.  He was optioned following yesterday’s game to make room for Sean O’Sullivan, who will pitch tonight against the Pirates and AJ Burnett.  We’re expecting Maikel Franco to head back to the Majors to stay, either Friday or Saturday.

At this juncture, it’s not just about Cody getting comfortable in left field, but also to make sure he’s right at the plate.  Following a blistering start to the season, he’s not been hitting well with the big team, either of late.  On the Phillies side, Dom Brown, Cody Asche, Cam Rupp and Darin Ruf are the position players with available options–using the options and moving these guys around shouldn’t really be a surprise when they’re not playing well–or not getting at-bats.  Eventually, I think the Phillies will do what I’ve been calling for them to do:  cut bait with old guys like Sizemore and Francoeur and let the young guys work out on the upper level.  For now, though, they’re not making those moves–because they don’t have to.  Perhaps also because those elderly players have been playing a bit better in May and could possibly become trade assets to some degree, as the season goes on.  When a player forces their hand, like Maikel has with his play this Spring, moves will be made.  No word yet if Cody owns a 1B glove or will try RF.  For now, he’s 3B/LF.

Here are today’s moves:

3B/LF Cody Asche optioned by Philadelphia and assigned to Lehigh Valley

LHP Nick Hill reassigned to Reading

C Logan Moore promoted from Reading and assigned to Lehigh Valley

Tommy Joseph placed on Disabled List (concussion)

[For Reading, C Gabriel Lino activated from DL; LHP Ethan Stewart added to DL (bicep strain).

For Tommy, we’ve learned that he hasn’t officially been diagnosed with a concussion at this point, but that it “felt different” and that he was removed and is being tested as a precautionary procedure at this juncture.  We wish him well and hope everything is OK for both professional and personal reasons.

Numerology:  Duran is now wearing #6.  Asche will assume his rightful #5.  Logan Moore will wear #11.

  1. Good come-from-behind win from on Tuesday night but it is rather unfortunate that seven scoreless innings from Aumont went for naught on Wednesday.
