HOCKEY NIGHT IN ALLENTOWN: “Orange You Glad It’s Friday?” 4/10/2015

..

It’s the last Friday “Orange-Out” of the 2014-2015 Hockey Season.  The Phantoms have been eliminated from playoff contention.  With Pride at stake, the team tries to nail down a winning record in their first season in downtown Allentown.  Here’s what you need to know for tonight’s game:

Looking Back

The Phantoms were eliminated from playoff contention officially, on Wednesday night at the Wilkes-Barre Penguins came in and shut us out once again–in the process locking in their own playoff bid.  It was another 3-0 shut-out for rookie goalie Matt Murray.  The team played well and had chances, but ultimately could not push one past him.  18-yo Finnish rookie and first round pick Kasperi Kapanen had a goal for the Baby Pens in his first North American professional game on his first shot–and was named #1 star of the game over the dude who got his umpteenth shutout in goal.

Team Report

The team is now 31-32-6-1 and playing for pride–and a winning season.

Player Report

Offensive regulars Fyten, Goumas and Powe are still injured.  At “WordPress” time, not updates on their condition.  Powe is not expected back quickly.

Tonight’s Game

The Norfolk Admirals are in town for two in a row (travel, and whatnot) tonight and tomorrow.  We’ll head down there for one last tilt next Wednesday before the Admirals become an ECHL team next season.  The Admirals are in last place in the division, and last place in the conference.  The Phantoms have not lost to the Admirals this season.

Puck Drop:  7:05PM

Doors Open:  6:00PM

Arrival Time:  4:45PM to assure a seat at Chicke’s and Pete’s or Allentown BrewWorks

Traffic and Parking:  Nothing new to report.  Changes in the meters on Hamilton and the first block abutting have not been passed by Council and have not taken effect yet.  Pre-paid passes for the arena garage (only way you can park there) are still available at this time, at PPLCenter.com–remember, they cost more because fees are added.

Tickets:  Seats are still available for tonight’s game–it has not gone to ‘SRO’ status yet.  The VIP package has been sold out.

Promotion:  Phan Nation T-Shirts will be on your seats when you arrive.  It’s an Orange-out, as the Phantoms will be wearing their alternate-orange jerseys for the last time this season.

Jersey Raffle:  The Allentown Police jerseys (below) from the last game will continue to be raffled off at the main entrance benefiting the police department.  Purchase chances for the remaining ones as you enter tonight, and the winners from both Wednesday and tonight will be announced near the end of the game.  Add your phone number if you will not be in attendance.

I’m sorry I don’t have more hockey for you tonight–it’s that time of the season.  However, please enjoy these excellent photos taken by Phan Nation correspondent Jack Mitroka.  They are posted here with his permission–please do not steal them.  They were taken 3/28/2015 versus Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at the PPL Center.

Looking Ahead

Right back at it tomorrow night: same arena, same opponent–for “Fan Appreciation Night.”  Reports have plenty of giveaways including practice jerseys, pucks, autographs, game-used items, sticks and the like.  Then, Tuesday night, the Hershey Bears come back for one last fracas before the Orange shuffle down to Norfolk one last time next Friday.

Across The River

The IronPigs are home tonight too:  look for fireworks in the sky after the game(s).

See you….well, I guess I’ll be at the arena until the tarps come off–then over to Coca Cola Park for the Chad Billingsley rehab.

  1. Not quite sure how the Phantoms can have a “winning season” at this point — Lehigh Valley have 31 total wins and 39 total losses (32 losses in regulation, 6 losses in overtime and 1 loss via the shootout) … Even if the Phantoms win all six of their remaining games (which is rather unlikely but, hey, let’s pretend it’s actually possible), Lehigh Valley can only get to thirty-seven total victories.

Six of the Phantoms 31 total wins came via the shootout, so that makes only 25 games the Phantoms won by actually scoring a “real goal” (i.e., not a shootout goal). Plus, the Phantoms won at least a few games in overtime this season but I can’t remember exactly how many — I am curious to know whether or not, out of the 70 AHL games played thus far, Lehigh Valley has even managed to win 20 games in regulation time?
