The IronPigs begin a “wraparound” series in Durham tonight with Greg Smith on the mound. Our counterparts covering the Bulls asked for a series preview about our team and I obliged. Read it here.
The ‘Pigs won yesterday’s getaway game in Norfolk on the strength of Tyson Gillies’ arm. You’ve heard the radio call in the previous post–I was watching on MiLB.TV while listening to Matt: The guy was clearly out. What a way to win! Kenny Giles escapes trouble once again; his numbers seem OK, but he’s got to clean it up before he gets that call to the bigs. Chris Bootcheck with another masterful performance starting yesterday. Young Maikel Franco with a triple and a double, and Jimmy Murphy with a solo homer and a sac fly, paced the offensive attack.
The ‘Pigs are a man short, and only have two on the bench. We’ll see if we can get another position player or two as we return home on Tuesday for 22 home games over 30 days. The pitching is in good shape for now, but there are no more “starters in waiting,” so those guys are going to have to stay healthy and effective. And the same goes in Philly–either that, or it could soon be “Biddle Time.” More on the potential of a Biddle call-up, soon.
And speaking of starters: I’ve heard the whispers that Cliff Lee may need a rehab before he returns to the Philly rotation. With so many home dates–and hopefully better weather–in June, there is the distinct possibility of a Coca Cola Park Rehab appearance for Mr. Lee. Don’t ask me when, we’ll have to map it out once he starts throwing.
There’s BrewFest at the park this Saturday: Read more about hit here if interested.
More news later, as we plan ahead for additional events this season, and look back at May–as well as the first half.
