As the Piggies shuffle off to Buffalo for a four-game set–all day games–they’ve made some moves:
(some recent moves here, too, in case you missed them)
INF Freddy Galvis added to the DL with broken clavicle. Will require surgery. 6-8 weeks, projected.
OF Clete Thomas added to the DL with two broken ribs. Return unknown.
C Cameron Rupp and INF Andres Blanco activated from DL.
INF Matt Tolbert added to the DL: finger.
INF Addison Maruszak signed to a minor league deal by Philadelphia and assigned to Lehigh Valley
C Sebastian Valle reassigned to Reading Fightins.
OF/1B Darin Ruf and RHP Ethan Martin activated from the Philadelphia DL and assigned to Lehigh Valley, following a couple of IronPigs appearances which were officially “rehab” appearances.
RHP Jon Pettibone (above) added the the DL with shoulder difficulty.
Pettibone had been limited in the number of pitches he threw in the last couple games he started. Coaches said he was “laboring” but I didn’t notice so much from the stands. Perhaps that’s a testament to Jon–pitching through pain and still able to be effective. However, the discomfort was not improving. It was announced that he’d be missing his next start and consulting a physician regarding the continued trouble. It’s not clear whether this is a continuation of the shoulder problems he had last summer in Philadelphia which cost him the end of the season–or the shoulder difficulty he experienced in Spring Training. I hate shoulders. Best of luck to Jon; we hope to see him back and healthy soon, but I’m not hopeful, unfortunately. Brad Lincoln will fill Pettibone’s starter spot for now.
Ruf might be around for a little bit as he gets his timing down and gets his swing back. He’s a notorious slow starter so the work will benefit him as he works his way back to Philadelphia. Expect to see him batting every day and playing corner outfield, 1B, or DH.
Martin has looked good in relief, but admits that he’s not quite “up to speed” with his fastball velocity. Expect him to get plenty of work out of the ‘pen. He is exclusively a reliever now.
Tommy Joseph was added to the Reading DL recently with a fore-arm or wrist injury. Valle should get plenty of playing time in Reading in the interim.
Addison Maruszak, 27, came up through the Yankees system and appeared in 94 games for Scranton last season. He hit .254 with 21 doubles and 4 HR. He can play all the infield positions. He stole zero bases last season. He should provide depth for middle infielders Ronny Cedeno and Andres Blanco. It appears he will wear #8.
The ‘Pigs will play at 4:05PM today (Saturday) in Buffalo. The next three days, the games will be at 1:05PM. The IronPigs are 10-3 in day games.
All the teams in the IL North are within 2.5 games of each other. Buffalo is 3-7 in their last 10, having lost 3 in a row. P’tucket is in first place now, 1.0 game ahead of the IronPigs.
The IronPigs have a day off next Wednesday, then open a 4-game home set with Toledo Thursday.
See you at the SteelHawks tonight!
