Steelhawk’s Game Preview 5/14/2014

Offical Lehigh Valley Steelhawk News:

STEELHAWKS LOOK TO DISMISS THE HISS

Nashville Venom Visit the Valley for the First Time

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (4-1) host the Nashville Venom (3-2) in this weekend’s “Salute to Heroes Night” game. Saturday night’s kickoff at 7:05pm will be the start of the Steelhawks final game in a four game home stand. Nashville will be making their first trip to the Valley on a night both teams are looking to rebound with wins after losing the previous week, Lehigh Valley to Alabama and Nashville to Georgia.

In the Steelhawks Mother’s Day matchup, the Hammers converted a short field goal as time expired to snag the win. QB Adam Bednarik had his highest completion rate on the year last week with 75% (completing 18 of 24 passes). He has been the offensive leader this year, becoming more of a dual threat when needed. He has 1,042 total yards and 21 total touchdowns (16 passing, 5 rushing). Bednarik has found a new favorite target in veteran WR Torieal Gibson, a 1,000 yard receiver last season. Last week Gibson tallied 86 yards and a touchdown on eight catches, a single game high for the franchise this season.

Lehigh Valley’s defense will have to contend with a potent Venom attack. The game features the league’s number one scoring defense – Steelhawks allowing only 38.2 points per game, against the number two scoring offense – Nashville puts an average of 50.8 points on the board each week. The Steelhawks need their front five – led by DL Justin Wells (3 sacks, 3.5 tfl), DL Brandon Sutton (2.5 sacks, 3 tfl), LB Michael Woodhouse (2 sacks, 2 tfl) to disrupt Nashville’s backfield. With the Venom attempting nearly 40 passes per game, look for Lehigh Valley’s defensive backs to make big plays. Combined they tally 11 total interceptions (2nd in the league). Dwayne Hollis (30.5 tackles) leads the group with 5, Stefaun Whitehead (29 tackles) and Terrance Osborne (19 tackles) both have two each.

Nashville is coming off a rough two weeks in which they lost to the Georgia fire twice after starting the season 3-0. The Venom’s WR Phillip Barnett (37 catches for 412 yds) is the current league leader in reception touchdowns with 12 and leads a dangerous receiving arsenal that accumulates 249.8 yards per game, good for a league’s best in Pass Offense. Their defensive leaders include DB Corry Stewart (27.5 tackles, 5 ints, 7 pbus) and LB Wayne Daniels (4.5 sacks, 5 tfl, 10 tackles), DB Scooter Rogers (16.5 tackles, 4 ints, 4pbus, 0.5 sack), and DL James Frazier (4 sacks, 4.5 tfl, 2 pbus).

Kickoff for this Saturday’s “Salute to Heroes Game” game will be at 7:05pm. Don’t forget that at each Steelhawks’ home game, every time the Steelhawks score a touchdown, one lucky season ticket holder will be entered into the Boscov’s Travel drawing to win a Free Vacation.

They return to the Lehigh Valley for their final home game, and their 2014 PIFL regular season finale, for a June 28th matchup with rival Richmond Raiders. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night.
