The second half of our 8-game home stand starts tonight, as the RailRiders stop by for their first four of the 2013 season at Coca Cola Park.  The IronPigs lead the 2014 IronRail series 3-1 after an April wrap-around series in Moosic.  If you recall, we were way ahead last season, too, and ended up coughing up the trophy on a tiebreaker at the end of the season.  Let’s get the beat down on them so that it doesn’t happen that way again!

Looking Back:

The Pigs salvaged a 2-2 split with the Braves following two late-game melt-downs.  They did it by virtue of two eighth inning rallies–good to see.  Also of note:  some better bull pen work to keep us in those games.  2014 series with the G-Braves goes to the IronPigs 6-2.

Changing Faces, Old and New:

RHP Ethan Martin, now a reliever exclusively, pitched yesterday afternoon and is scheduled to pitch again on Wednesday.  He should remain with the ‘Pigs for a time, in order to build arm strength.  He could be optioned to the team, too, at the end of his rehab time, if needed.  OF/1B Darin Ruf should remain for a time as well, in order to get at-bats and work in LF and 1B.  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get time in RF, too, if they think Byrd to CF, Brown in LF and Ruf in RF is the best option in Philadelphia.  INF Jayson Nix could arrive this week if he accepts his assignment (he has the option of electing free agency instead).  C Cameron Rupp and INF Andres Blanco could be ready to return to the team from their oblique injuries sometime during the next four home games.

Bumps and Bruises:

More like, broken bones.  OF Clete Thomas suffered two broken ribs the other night on a crashing catch at the LF wall.  He then singled before leaving the game.  That’s one tough cat.  No time table has been mentioned for Clete; it may be a case of how much pain he’s willing to endure and/or risking getting hit again.  INF Freddy Galvis suffered a broken clavicle which will need some surgical intervention.  He’s been said to be out 6-8 weeks.  Neither player has been added to the DL as of this writing, but I’d think both are candidates if space is needed for any of the players above.  RP BJ Rosenberg has thrown, but is being monitored for the after effects of the concussion he suffered on a line drive during the last home stand.

Where They Stand:

The IronPigs are currently 19-18, fourth place in the tight IL North, 3.0 games back of current leader Buffalo.  The ‘Pigs are 6-4 over their last 10, having won two in a row.  The RailRiders are currently 19-17, third place and 2.5 games back.  They are 7-3 over their last 10 having lost yesterday.  This is an important set for not only the IronRail, but also the tight IL North Division and potential Wild Card bid.

At the Park:

Picture night tonight if you arrive early enough, find your way onto the field for some shots with your favorite players.  It’s the first time they’re doing this, and I won’t be there.  Please let me know how it goes…

Buchanan, Smith, Enright, and O’Sullivan are the projected starters for the RailRider series.

Pizza Cutter Night is tomorrow.  Happy Hour Thursday, and Black Out Friday Fireworks closes it out.

Save the Date:

July 1.  AT RailRiders.  Event details to come.  Take the afternoon off, maybe…

See you at the park,

  1. any idea why there was only 3000 fans at tonights game? The Yankees really use to sell tickets, i’m a little worried about these weak crowds—it’s definitely time for the Pigs and Phantoms to work together—i think the Pigs dollars are slipping to the ice game already
