Mai-kel, Mai-kel, Motorcycle: IronPigs Down Braves

Early in April, as the IronPigs’ bats were suffering to the tune of the worst average in the International League, I suggested–contrary to DiPro’s suggestion–that they SKIP batting practice.  My thought was that if guys were pressing, squeezing the bat a little too hard, it would have a negative effect.  Relax, get a rest, and maybe things would happen.

Just like last season, the early Pigs have been a better road team than home team.  The distractions of travel perhaps allowing the game of baseball to slow down a tad and the talent comes through.  Yesterday, travel adventures caused the Pigs to arrive late in Gwinnett, and batting practice wasn’t an option.  No matter.  Just like that, they pounded out 12 hits and scored 7 runs on the way to a 7-5 victory.

Maikel Franco homered in the seventh, for his second in AAA.  It was a solo shot–a “no doubt about it” drive to left on a 1-0 pitch.  But earlier in the game, a bigger hit:  a 2-run line single to left on a 2-2 pitch to score the first 2 of 4 for the IronPigs in the inning.  Add in a double down the line, and Franco had a 3/5 day which came a triple short of the cycle.

Clete, Murphy, Brignac (2), and Hill also doubled.  Brignac was also 3/5 on the day, holding down that clean-up spot with aplomb.  Clete Thomas was on base 3/5 times and scored twice.  He’s now hitting .275 and his OBP is above .400.  He added a stolen base, his seventh.

Koyie Hill’s batting average is now up to .367 with his 2/4 day featuring a double and 2 RBI.

Sean O’Sullivan got the win–his first as an IronPig–allowing 4 earned runs over 5.1.  He walked 2 and struck out one.  Cesar Jimenez got him out of a jam in the sixth, stranding two, and pitched a scoreless seventh.  Gwinnett added a run off Justin De Fratus in the eighth, and Garcia worked around Cedeno’s adventures at shortstop to close it out in the ninth.
